Old library’s future in doubt

The fate of the old Canterbury Public Library still hangs in the balance. The Chief Librarian (Mr J. E. D. Stringleman) said the building would not be retained for library purposes. Books from the library would be moved to the new' library, at the corner of Oxford Terrace and Gloucester Street in three years time. The original scheme was for the Post Office to use the library, according to the Christchurch City Council’s assistant director of housing and property (Mr J. M. Beauchamp)

who said that the Post Office had “gone cold’ on the idea. The Workers’ Education Association has also shown an interest in the library' and still hopes that the council will make it available. Demolition of the library is another possibility, as the weight of the library’s 343,000 books is putting great stress on the building. But removal of the books would make the the council will make the building safe, said Mr Beauchamp.
