Rain stopped in time for Orchidra
I Special correspondent Trentham The deluge that fell on the course from late on Sundav until some time on Tuesday threatened for a long time to keep Orchidra from the Galaxy Stakes at Trentham yesterday. But the ram stopped and the Woodville trainer, Noel Eales, waited until vesterdav morning before he' made a final decision. He rang officials at the track before scratching time, discovered that the rain had held off and decided to run the mare. Then, before the race. Tales and the rider, Des Harris, went into a huddle. The result was the perfect execution of a plan that
brougnt about victory by a t; length and a half. a The tactics were simple. If! the pace was slack near the E end of the back straight, n Harris was to force the n pace. I "1 told Des that if he got a beaten in front, I wouldn’t! mind,” Eales said. a It never, of course, came h to that. Orchidra took off t just before the 800 m. held a, handy break on the turn andie though there was a strong a late bid from Chateau Bleau,,i< the Woodville mare saw the it! 2000 m out comfortably. | Orchidra, a mare by Onci-lo dium from Alexandra, at! I. five has run only four times (t over a middle distance. She f; was second to Happy Union E in the Avondale Cup lastjv December and tried two dis-;
tance races, which she won; at three. Her physical makeup,; Eales said, has not really made it possible to try too many staying tests with her. That”, though, may change after yesterday. Orchidra will not be seen again this season and there is a chance that she will go! to Melbourne in the spring. Her owner. Mr P. D. Sand-, ers, on holiday in Australia at present, is keen on the; idea of racing the mare; there. Bernie Connors, the owner; of another Eales runner,; Lone Hand, is keen as well; to try Australia. "It’s a bit; far ahead to make plans.”: Eales said. ‘ We’ll just see what happens.” For Des Harris the win on,
:one good mare follow's not long after a farewell for his ; favourite, La Mer. He played a leading role in Orchidia’s success yesterday. The win, las well, put the seal on what has been a fine season for Egles. Chateau Bleau, though she did not handle the ground • all that well, put up a dog;ged finishing effort. She had tried 1600 m at Avondale at her previous (outing and her rider there, Bob Vance, had suggested to Brian Deacon that the mare I might be ready for more :ground. She proved that, but Tike Orchidra she will not run again this season. Extra Deal which settled third or fourth in the running, fought on well over ,the final stages for third.
t| The favourite, Mun Lee, y which was fourth, had every 1 chance according to her yrider, Maurice Campbell. i , Mun Lee settled back on’ lithe fence after drawing No. 1 1. She raced there to the turn and after getting clear ?at the top of the straight 1 looked likely for a while, - but her run came to an end. Mun Lee. was followed t home by Purple Kiwi, which s loomed as a major threat on ,; the turn. Then came Bye > Babe and Red Terror. JI Results;— T.A.B. Code: WR. y (Weather overcast; track heavy.)
