Referee punched
PA Wellington A rugby player punched the referee in a game at Karori on April 28, but was not aware that he did so because he was “wild at the time,” the police said in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington on Monday. Tala Tala, aged 28, a factory labourer (Mr M. F. Quigg), pleaded guilty to assaulting the referee. Mr B. J. McK. Kerr, S.M., remanded him for a week on bail and called for a pre-sen-tence report. Detective Sergeant D. Whitford said in evidence that Tala became involved in an altercation with an opposing player late in the second half of the match.
i The referee of the junior 14th B grade match had apj proached the two, and Tala ihad punched him on the jaw, knocking him unconscious.
| The referee's jaw was bruised and he required imedical treatment. The witness said Tala had said he was so angry that he wae 'not aware he hit the referee.
