A Canterbury under 15 representative team has been entered in the Trillium World Youth Soccer tournament, to be held in Montreal in August next year. The Canterbury Junior Football Association is now awaiting a reply, confirming the acceptance of the entry. The tournament is open to all countries with the qualification being that entrants must have won a national competition within the previous two years. Canterbury has done so: its under 12 team won the national tournament in 1977.
If the entry is accepted, a team of 13 boys will be selected. Besides being talented footballers. they must also be able to take part in fund raising schemes.
The rain on Saturday morning caused confusion among clubs, many not certain if the junior soccer grades had been cancelled. The problems were caused by the timing of the cancellation notice on the radio and soccer officials would be advised to take steps to ensure the problem does not recur.
One match which did take place was the ninth grade game at Wycola Park between Shamrock and Hornby. The Shamrock goal-keeper. Andrew Spence, had a fine match and his efforts went a long way towards helping Shamrock win, 2-0. Its goal scorers were Kevin Dobbs and Andrew Steele.
A twelfth grade section four game between Bays United and Burwood, originally set down for Burwood Park No. 1, was eventually played at Bower Park, with Bavs United winning. 3-2. It led. 3-0 well into the second half but then seemed to relax and conceded two goals within five minutes. Brent Morgan, Jamie Lewis and Andrew Dordan scored for Bays while Steven Robinson and Stewart McKay were Burwood’s "oal scorers. # $ » The Cashmere tenth grade side
had a worthwhile trip to Rang!ora where it beat the home team 1-0, with a goal by Tony Phair. It was pleasing to see the chairman of the New Zealand Junior Football Association and the C.J. F.A.. Mr Alan Fraser, refereeing the game.
The Rangers under 14 team managed to overcome a difficult pitch at Cuthberts Green to beat New Brighton 2-0. Patrick McKeever and Michael Mulcahy scored for Rangers but the score was kept down by the good form of the Brighton goal-keeper, David van Voorst, a Canterbury under 13 representative last year. The Technical eighth grade side continued on its winning way with a 5-0 win over Nomads. Tony Jarvis contributed four goals with Jeremy Millichip scoring the fifth. Although he did not score, Jason Ray played a major part in Technicals win, helping to set up several scoring opportunities. * * ♦
The under 14 Indoor six-a-side competition began this week at Canterbury Court. Organised by one of the Canterbury Junior Football Association’s vice-presi-dent, Mr Noel Hopgood, the first round contained several entertaining matches. An outstanding game was between Burwood and New Brighton, with play see-sawing swiftly from end to end. It needed an excellent goal by Robert Stanton to break the deadlock and eventually enabled Brighton to win, 3-1. One of the highest scoring matches was the Western thirteenth grade team’s 11-1 thrashing of the Cashmere fourteenth grade side. After being relegated to section IT this season, Western obviously feels it has a point to prove. It has already had a 10-0 and a 7-0 win and proceeded to demonstrate that its skills were not confiined to playing on grass.
