T.N.T. doing much better
NZP/X Sydney Thomas Nationwide Transport, Ltd, earned more during the nine months to March 31 than for the previous full year, and appears to be heading for a record year. The company’s net profit for the latest nine months, rose 65.4 per cent to $Au5t14.915,000, representing a $696,000 increase on earnings for the 12 months to June 30 last year. T.N.T. suffered its first profit downturn last year, since incorporation in 1961, when earnings slipped 1.5 per cent to $14,219,000, mainly as a result of the nine-week longshoremen’s strike in the United States, and losses in the formerly
w hoi! y-owned EuropeNigeria shipping venture. The group’s United States container shipping subsidiary, Trans Freight Lines Inc. was trading profitably, and is expected to produce a satisfactory result for the year. Last year T.F.L. lost $4.5M, because of the longshoremen’s strike, and the net loss amounted to SI.4M. “The substantially improved profit for the nine months reflects the resump-1 tion of normal trading by Trans Freight Lines, and the changes made in respect of Acme Fast Freight Inc, and the Nigerian operations as stated in the half-yearly report,” said the chairman of T.N.T. (Mr F. W. Millar).
