Family award record?
PA Oamaru An Oamaru family of four brothers and two sisters claims what is believed to be a New Zealand record of three gold and two silver Duke of Edinburgh awards. and three Queen's awards, with one member vet to reach the age where he can study for these. They are the children of Mr and Mrs E K Cayford. of Boundary Creek, and all gained the awards when about 18 years of age. The Duke of Edinburgh awards were gained when they were pupils of Waitaki Girls or Bov's High Schools., while the Queen's
awards were earned when they were members of the Girls’ Brigade to gam the scouting movement. I’hc eldest, Joel, now aged 27, who is a doctor rtf physics in London, started by gaining a Duke of Edinburgh gold award. He is a former Waitaki Boys’ High School dux. He was followed by Jerry. aged 2F who earned a Duke of Edinburgh award and the Queen's scout award. He is now a schoolteacher at Blackmouth n the Lake Munowai region Then came Judith, aged 2-1. who also earned a Duke of Edinburgh silver and the Queen’s award.
She is now Mrs Gabit.es, lives in Timaru, and is a lieutenant in the Girls’ Brigade. Russell, who successfully completed the Duke of Edinburgh gold award, was killed in a 'racier accident about five years ago. Finally, Andrea, ggad 18, was presented wiin her Duke of Edinburgh gold award and .he Queen’s Girls Brigade award last Sunday at the Oamaru Union Pariih Church. -She is only tne third member of the local’ Girls Brigade to gain the double award. Gregory, aged 12 could well add to the record.
