Hamilton first

PA Hastings Hamilton became New Zealand’s top athletic club when it won the national league title for the fourth time at the twenty-ninth Air New Zealand Highland Games at Hastings yesterday. Hamilton finished the Watties sponsored event with 306 points. The only South Island club, Christchurch H. 5.0.8. was second with 272 and Victoria University was third with 211. Otahuhu finished fourth with 187 points, and the host club, Hastings, was fifth with 158. Hamilton

was placed in almost every event in the two-day series and it was this consistent place-getting that won it the title. The New Zealand cycling representative, Anthony Cuff, of Palmerston North, took the Games’ top prize, the founder’s trophy of excellence, which is awarded to the Games’ most outstanding performer. Cuff dominated all the 12 cycling events he entered. He will represent New Zealand in the one kilometre time trial at the World Championship in the Netherlands in August.
