Western wastes chances

By

DAVID LEGGAT

In spite of an impressive display. Western could take only one point from its Midland Coachlines Soccer League match with Rangers at Rangers Park yesterday. The final score was 0-0 but Western had several good scoring chances which were wasted. The first half contained much entertaining soccer but the second half was rather scrappy. Western had two chances from breakaways in the 17th

and 28th minutes but the first was blocked and the second was well saved by the Rangers goal-keeper, Brian Reeves. Five minutes before the interval, the Rangers striker, Trevor Blake, hit the crossbar with a strong headed effort while Western had another two good chances early in the second half. The result gives both teams three points and leaves them second equal with Papanui W.M.C, after two rounds. These three

teams trail Caversham by one point. Hanimex United deservedly won the final of the Air New Zealand tournament in Auckland yesterday, beating Newmans Nelson United, 2-1. Had Hanimex made better use of two or three excellent chances in the first half it could have won by a much more impressive ginThe first two goals came from penalties -— lan Ormond for Hanimex and John Enoka for Nelson. The win-

ning goal came from Duncan Cole, after fine build-up work for Duncan Ormond. Stop Out won the only Rothmans League match played yesterday, beating Manawatu United, 1-0, in Lower Hutt, The goal, in the first half, was scored by Shane Rufer, a member of the national under-19 team last year. The result leaves Stop Out in second place on four points, but still four behind the competition leader, Mount Wellington.
