‘Careless’ rider loses one day

By

J. J. Boyle

The quality of mercy pervaded the penalty on the Riccarton jockey, Ron McCann, after he was found guilty of careless riding in the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton yesterday. McCann was suspended up to and including tomorrow —in his case one riding day — for his handling of Spy Force in the incident in which interference was caused to the favourite, Grey Way, about 250 m from the finish. Spy Force was relegated from first to fifth in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s feature sprint race and second leg of the T.A.B. double.

In fixing the penalty of McCann the Canterbury Jockey Club’s judicial committee announced that it had taken into account the frankness with which McCann had given his statement — also his creditable record “in relation to breaches of the rules of racing.” In escaping that lightly McCann must be the envy of several fellow jockeys, and notably the Melbourne-based Gary Willetts, who earlier this season was suspended for three months for his contribution to an incident similar to the one that marred the Great Easter Handicap yesterday.
