Hat-trick for The Clippie

The Clippie brought her record to three wins in succession when she triumphed as favourite in the South Island Three-Year-Old Championship Stakes at Riccarton yesterday.

She missed some work with a foot injury after she won the Inglewood Stakes at Rangiora last week, but a

gallop on Sunday helped to fit her for her 2000 m test yesterday, and she got the job safely done by threequa4ters of a length from In Flight. The Clippie was again favouring her near foreleg after her win yesterday, but she gave her rider, Allie Robinson, no anxiety in the race.

“She was always going well, and ran it out strongly,” Robinson said. Robinson settled The Clippie handy to the leading group, and kept her to the inside until they made the straight. He brought the Wood-lands-owned and trained filly forward on the outside of I Master Lea early in the run

home, then kicked her clear. In Flight, though running greenly, managed to put fresh interest in the race when she charged down the outside to run the winner to three-quarters of a length.

Master Lea weakened •to third in a gap of close to two lengths but was unchallenged for that position.
