Abortion quota?
Sir, — The Abortion Supervisory Committee (“The Press,” April 16) can hardly complain that too many abortions are being carried out unless they have in mind a specific permissible number for the country as a whole per annum. If this is so, it would surely be relatively simple to give each consultant a strict quota. And if, as seems possible, these quotas were exhausted in the first part of -the gynaecological year, a considerable reduction in pressure on facilities and bed-space could be achieved. By a little persuasion and perhaps some more well-thought legislation prospective parents could be induced to have their children in the latter part of the “gynoyear.’ Abortions in winter and births in summer would have the added advantage of a saving in fuel consumption for heating and nappy-dry-ing. A tax penalty on deviants should be all that is required. — Yours, etc., DIANA GREGSON. April 16, 1979.
