One too many, say objectors

Objections have been received, from 22 persons to a conditional-use application to convert a two-storey garage and upper room at 9 Kahu Road, Fendalton, into a flat ; for one person. The Waimairi County Council hearings sub-com-: mittee considered the application. Mr and Mrs R. M. Wil-1 liams, who already own two flats in a two-storey building on the property, want to convert the garage and room into a one-person flat. Objectors said that further tenants would make the area noisy, and create a traffic hazard on a bend outside the property, because there was inadequate off-street parking for tenants’ cars. Mr and Mrs Williams said they were prepared to accept a limitation on the number of tenants, to comply with the maximum zone density of six. The county planner (Mr D. D. Hinman) said that the proposed use would not have any detrimental effect on the locality, but that the application should be declined because of unsatisfactory bulk and location conditions, and inadequate off-street parking. The county traffic engineer (Mr P. L. Atkinson) said the council’s code of ordinance required six off-street parking spaces, but the proposed development made provision for only . one.
