Shirley Boys’, Burnside swimmers excel in S.I. events

: Shirley Boys' High School ‘swimmers won the most titles (five) in the boys’ section, and I Burnside High School the most !(nine) in the girls’ section at the ■ South Island secondary schools' swimming championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday. Burnside, with three boys’ titles, was easily the top school over all, having 12 wins. As Burnside has three national champions, Paul Rowe, Tracy Turnbull and Rickie Binning, in its ranks, this was expected. Canterbury and Otago are the two strongest swimming centres in the South Island, so it was natural that they should dominate the championships. Of the 40 events decided, only three went to swimmers or divers from outside these two centres. Raymond Vallance (Marlborough College) won the under 15 years diving, and Karen Tradieu (Marlborough College for Girls) won the over 15 years diving. The only title that will rest outside Dunedin or Christchurch is the over 15 years 50m freestyle. It was won by an Ashburton College girl, Michelle Binnie. She won in a blanket finish, all six finalists in the event finishing within half a second of each other. Although the New Zealand championships were only two weeks ago it was obvious most of the top swimmers had been taking things easy since. Their times were considerably below; their best apart from one or two exceptions. Chris Ellis (St Andrew’s College) maintained a steady pace in the open 400 m freestyle and for three-quarters of the race was tracked by John Smith iKaikorai Valley H.S.). In the last 100 m, Ellis drew away to return a time only four seconds outside his best. David Connor (Otago Boys’ H.S.) did not swim in the 200 m medley at the national championships but on Saturday returned a time that would have given him seventh place in the final. Dene Robinson (Christchurch Boys’ H.S.) who was on Connor's heels at the finish also surprised with his time. The last race, the open boys 4 x 50m freestyle relay, was one of the most thrilling. Shirley Boys’ H.S. maintained a good lead through most of the race, but on the final leg, three schools all made inroads on its lead and the first four finishers hit the end of the pool in rapid succession. But Shirley (its team Grant Forbes, Grant Gillard, Paul Fidovv and Lewis Clarke) held off Southland Boys’ H.S., Burnside H.S.. and Otago Boys’ H.S. Robinson won the over 15 years 50m freestyle in a smart 26.45ec and in the same section Rove won the 100 m freestyle with ease. Gillard and Scott Aucutt

•(Christ's College* renewed their rivalry in backstroke races. Gillard won the 100 m and beat Aucutt as he did in the national championships final. On Saturday Aucutt was pushed into third place by the rangy Aranui HJS. swimmer, Gary Mason. But over 200 m Aucutt had too much power for Gillard and was able to lift his rating in the final few metres when challenged by Gillard. Melanie Jones (Middleton Grange) produced a desperate sprint in the open 100 m butterfly to hit the wall with Megan Tohill (Moreau College). Both girls recorded the same time, I min O.lsec, but Miss Jones was given first place by the judges. Miss Binning was kept on her guard by Ngarita Kain (Aranui H.S.) in the under 15 years 100 m breaststroke and finished with the reasonable time of Imin 19.2 sec. In the 200 m event Kim Dewar (Burnside H.S.) was a comfortable winner and her time too was commendable. Miss Jones had no challengers in the over 15 years backstroke events and in the same agegroup Miss Turnbull comfortably won the 100 m freestyle, but. succumbed to Jenny Gwynne (Moreau, in the 200 m. Burnside easily won tl?e 4 x 50m open freestyle relay, but Avonside Girls’ U.S. with a sound team performance took second place from some more favoured teams.
