'Plastics use can be cut'
NZPA-Reuter New York World oil consumption could be cut by reversing the trend of replacing natural products by those derived from oil, according to the British scientist, Lord Rothschild, former head of a top policy-research team for the British Government. Because of illness, Lord Rothschild. a former research chief for Shell Oil, and the British Government, could not address an international conference on science and technology at New York University, but his
; speech was read to the 75 attending scientists. Lord Rothschild said the ; post-war trend towards cheap oil-based plastics had swamped such natural substances as metal, rubber, and wood. This need not continue, he 1 said, citing the example of improved natural rubber production in Malaysia which had made it cheaper than synthetic rubber. He also said that other synthetic products based on oil could be made more cheaply from common crops like maize.
