New superintendent for Sunnyside
Dr J. A. Begg has been appointed medical superintendent of Sunnyside Hospital.
Dr Begg, whose three-year appointment was announced yesterday, has been acting medical superintendent at the hospital since the retirement of the late Dr T. E. Hall last year. Dr Begg has held the post of deputy medical superintendent for the last 13 years. During that period he has been principal psychiatric consultant responsible for out-patient clinics and two of the hospital’s long-stay wards. A founder member of the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s psychiatric advisory committee, Dr Begg is also a member of the executive of the New' Zealand Medical Association.
During four months overseas study leave in 1973, Dr Begg worked in forensic medicine, community psychiatry, and neurology. He was also awarded membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists at that time.
His work with the hospital and with the Health Department’s Mental Health Division has given Dr Begg
extensive experience in all areas of adult psychiatry, clinical psychiatry, community mental health, and the teaching of nurses and medical students.
