Rail backlog shifts

The Railways Department has begun to accept rail consignments from Christchurch to the North Island, but the backlog of freight is not expected to be cleared until the week-end. Manufacturers in the South Island have been hard hit by the delays, caused by a slip on the main line to Picton last week, combined with earlier delays to the Cook Strait ferries through strikes.

A Railways Department 1 spokesman said trains going north from Christchurch had , been fully laden and most ; of the urgent freight had left 1 Christchurch. One South Island manuI facturer has offered to fly i goods on behalf of its customers on the customers’ accounts, but for most the cost of airfreighting is prohibitive.
