PA Auckland; An American, Jerry Cole,! will be the next national! basketball coaching director! for the New Zealand Basketball Federation. Dr Cole is a teacher who! is taking a year’s sabbatical leave to come to New Zealand.
The present coach John Toomasian, has nearly finished his year-long contract. Dr Cole would have three main tasks said the executive officer of the Basketball Federation (Joe McLeod) yesterday. “He will teach the sport to phys-ed teachers, assist in our junior (under-20) development programme and help with our national men’s and women’s teams,” he said. “With his teaching background and his speciality in physical education it should be a big help/
Dr Cole will come to New) [Zealand in mid-June. He is [married and has two child* ren. He has coached and taught at California's North Highlands High School, the University of Denver, and Foothill College, in the Los Altos Hills, California. It appears that Dr Cola will be the last American to come to New Zealand on a one 7 year term. "We don't get the best possible value from them for only a year and we are al« ready making enquiries for Dr Cole’s replacement in. 1980 to be out here for a three-year term,” said Mr McLeod. “Dr Cole’s philosophy is similar to Toomasian’s and I think he will compliment the programme Toomasian has set-up.”
