Paparoa national park

Sir, — My letter on the Ananui Creek Caves (March 22) did not use the above heading as no such park exists. The park is proposed by N.F.A.C. The statutory role for investigating and recommending to the Minister of Lands new national parks or extensions to existing national parks is the function of the National Parks Authority. Reports in West Coast papers have suggested that no area in the Paparoa Range conforms to criteria used by the National Parks Authority to create national parks. The Forest Service’s preliminary assessment of the effect of the proposed logging plan for part of the Ananui Creek catchment concluded that it would not harm the cave system. It was realised that further investigations were desirable and they were initiated by the Forest Service and not as a response to protests organised by N.F.A.C. as stated by Gwenny Davis. The Forest Service is inviting a number of people to prepare comments on the proposed logging plan. — Yours, etc., R. E. J. WYLIE, Assistant Conservator of Forests. March 26, 1979.

[The heading is ours. It has been used throughout this controversy. It makes no suggestion that such a park exists which is why the n of national and the D of park are not capitalised. — Editor.]
