Gale at Kaikoura

Kaikoura took the worst of the gale-force southerly winds which were predicted for Christchurch yesterday afternoon, but there was no report of damage. The Christchurch weather office warned emergency services at 3

p.m. that a southerly change could bring 50knot winds. The southerly, when it interrupted balmy northwesterly conditions soon afterwards, gusted to only 38 knots in Christchurch, but gusts of 58 knots were recorded at Kaikoura.
