Prince to get £250 gift from council

NZPA Londor Prince Charles is to receive £250 ($482.50) from his local council towards restoring the roof of his 115-room mansion, Chevening House, in Kent. The Kent County Council decided to make the grant towards timber work on the roof above the library because the seventeenth-century house, constructed from plans drawn up by Inigo Jones, is of national importance. But the grant has caused a storm of controversy among Left-wing members of Parliament, who pointed out that the Prince of Wales's income last year of 145,000 ($279,850) worked out at almost £4OO ($772) a day. The anti-Royallsi member, Willie Hamilton, said: “Charles can easily afford to pay. Why should the man in the street have to fork out of his rates for this?” And another Labour member, Dennis Skinner, said: “Charles should give instructions not to take money. He doesn’t need IL” The application for the grant was made by the architects masterminding the renovations of Chevening House, which was built in 1825.
