Ship may sail soon
The Japan Line vessel Oriental Importer should be cleared from Lyttelton “within a day or so,” said the assistant national secretary of the Watersiders’ Federation (Mr S. M. Jennings) yesterday. Lyttelton watersiders refused to lift the lines to allow the ship to sail last Friday after loading Canterbury timber products, meat and bonemeal for Japan.
Mr Jennings said that the export cargo delayed by the dispute was worrying the watersiders and it was hoped to get the ship away as soon as possible. Mr Jennings said that on the way to New Zealand, the Oreintal Importer turned back to Noumea, New Caledonia, and paid off a Filipino crew and signed on Hong Kong crew members. The Filipono crew alleged it was owed $16,500, said Mr Jennings, and this was the basis of the complaint being investigated by the I.T.F. representative at Wellington and secretary of the union (Mr E. G. Thompson). Mr Thompson had to go overseas and was not due back until April 9. Mr Jennings said it was unlikely that Lyttelton watersiders would be asked to continue their action until that date.
