Money promised for New Brighton creche
New Brighton creche committee' members hope to have a child care facility started in about three months after it was announced yesterday that a Christchurch firm would give financial help. Mrs Pauline Shutt, the ] committee secretary, said Ishe was delighted by the offer by Mrs Pope, Ltd, to meet up to $4OOO of any [first-year deficit. Fund-raising for the creche would continue, and local service clubs would also be asked to help the project so that already-com-
- mitted Christchurch City > Council capital spending — r for the renovation of the ; Seaview Road church build- - ing — could be kept down. t A suburban committee his i been working on the project for about two years. Basic j needs of the creche are foi-' 1 lets, a kitchen, equipment e and a fenced outside play 3 area. / Mrs Shutt said she had been told by the managing s director of Mrs Pope, Ltd 1 (Mr F. M. Baddeley) that the i i creche was a good cause ;{which should not be held up -i by a lack of finance.
The willingness to pay up to $4OOO means that the firm of Mrs Pope might pay twice as much as all other businesses combined in the New Brighton district. A total of $2OOO had been pledged. There will also be a $2OOO Government sports and recreation grant, and another $lOOO from the Blogg Trust. Last week the City Council in a narrow vote said that ratepayers should not be expected to make up deficits for facilities such as suburban creches. To keep the deficit down, the creche would be open -four days a week, Tuesday to Friday, from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
