Ninety rings stolen
Burglars stole more than $10,500 worth of rings from Straven Jewellers, Ltd, at 10? Riccarton Road, on Thursday night. After forcing a door to the shop, they escaped with between 45 and 50 diamond rings, and about 45 dress rings.
Unlike most of the big jewellery thefts in Christchurch recently, the thieves did not use smash-and-grab tactics. The rings were taken from a stand inside the shop. None of the stolen pro-
perty had beer, recovered by last evening, and no arrest had been made. Christchurch detectives are also investigating the theft of $l5OO worth of carpet from the pavilion of the Avonside Tennis Club. The red, blue, and cream Persian carpet was lifted sometime between 7.30 p.m. on Thursday and 7.15 a.m. yesterday. Matching blue drapes were also stolen. The police believe that it would have taken two or more persons some time to remove the 56sq m carpet.
