Avonside I tested in table tennis

Av onside I was severely tested by Riccarton I in the twelfth round of the A grade inter-club table tennis competition on Wednesday evening. Eight of the 12 matches went to the deciding game and Avonside I was fortunate enough to win six of them. John Richards, the attacking left-hander, won his three singles for Avonside, all in three games. He had a tight battle with Stuart Armstrong, winning the decider, 23-21. Armstrong, although not playing with the certainty expected of a player with his ability, managed to overcome Mark Clasper and Martin Kelly in three, and Graham Lamb upset Kelly in straight games. Christine Kehoe, who played well but without success in the singles, combined with Armstrong to take the second doubles, but Avonside ensured itself of success by winning the other two doubles. The leading team, Avonside n. beat Linwood. 8-4. but the highlight was provided by Dennis Kalin, who outlasted Bert Thompson and Bill Scott in three long games and kept control against the aggressive former Otago representative, Simeon Cairns. Although Michael Burrowes showed more application against Thompson, he and Michael Prisk failed to gain a singles success, and Avonside also proved superior in doubles. Linwood had an easy win against Avonside HI, Michael Hamel and Richard Dixon gaining their expected wins in their singles although Dixon was extended to the third game in all matches. Tony Sargent was the main-
