Milk will be dearer

The price of milk will definitely rise during the next few months, reports the Press Association.

The Under-Secretary for Agriculture (Mr R. L. G. Talbot) said yesterday that the Government would soon reduce the SSSM subsidy.

Mr Talbot said he wanted to get the retail price as close as possible to the cost of production. If the total subsidy were lifted, milk would cost 18.6 c a pint. However, it was unlikely the Government would remove the subsidy altogether. It is believed, however, that milk could increase 50 per cent to 15c a pint.

Mr Talbot said he wanted to put the milk industry “on a sound plateau.” He was already anticipating a reduction in sales and was calling for better methods of milk marketing, packaging, and presentation.
