A storeman, aged 20, was remanded on bail of $l5OO when he appeared yesterday before Mr J. S. Bisphan, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of stealing $2600. No plea was entered by Graham George Aydon, who is alleged to have committed the, offence of stealing the money, the property of Wendy Jane Clifford, between February 12 and 15. A request for interim suppression of the defendant’s name was declined by the Magistrate who remanded Aydon to February 27. SEX CHARGE A man. aged 55, charged with attempting to have sexual intercourse with a girl, aged 10, was remanded in custody to March 5 to enable a psychiatric examination to be made. POLICE UNIFORM WORN Ross Trevor Smiler, aged 25, a sheet metal worker, was convicted and fined $75 when charged with wearing the uniform of a policeman in a hotel on Saturday, although not a member of the police force. Sergeant M. Paton said that about 7 p.m. on Saturday Smiler had gone to the Lancaster Park Hotel where he had introduced himself to the staff as a constable on posting from the Police Training College at Trentham.
Two hours later he was again seen in the hotel wearing a full police uniform of a type worn until 1977.
Sergeant Paton said the defendant had told another
police officer that his name was “Constable White.” He later said that the uniform, in good condition, had been found at a rubbish dump. In explanation Smiler said his de facto wife had been assaulted and that the man he believed responsible was drinking in the hotel. He had put on the uniform and had gone in pursuit of the man. DRUG OFFENCES A woman, aged 26. was placed on probation for two years when she appeared for sentence on two charges of being found in possession of drugs. Wendy Dawn Josephs, unemployed, last week pleaded guilty to charges of possessing cannabis leaf, and lysergide. The offences were committed on December 18. Counsel (Mr T. M. Abbott) said his client had had the cannabis leaf in her possession after cultivating it at home for her own use. The two LSD tablets had been given to her by a friend. They had not been solicited, and his client had not used them while she was living at Waikuku Beach, he said. The Magistrate said LSD was a very dangerous drug. Although prevalent two years ago this was the first time it had surfaced before him which, he said, indicated that it must be about again.
