Bad start for Finn yachting
PA Timaru I The national Finn-class I yachting championships got off to a bad start in Timaru yesterday when rain delayed the start of the first race for) an hour. Halfway through the race) the wind dropped away and) it was finished in almost windless conditions. T w e n t y-six yachtsmen from throughout New Zealand are taking part in the championships, and the standard is very high. At least 12 of the competitors ■ have represented New Zealand in the sport. Twenty-three started in yesterday’s race won by Graham Deegan, of Auckland, with a former national champion and Olympic representative Jonty Farmer, of Rotorua, in second place, and Freerk Kempkers, of Christchurch, third.
The championship continues for another five days with a further six races to be sailed. Results of the first race: G. Deegan (Auckland) 1, J. Farmer (Rotorua) 2. F. Kempkers (Christchurch) 3, R.
