PA Dunedin Sir Carl Victor Smith, a leading figure in the industrial and communkty life of Dunedin, has died. He was 81.

Sir Carl’s sense of humour became well known with the publication of his book “From N to Z,” which took a light-hearted look at New Zealand. The book ran to more than 18 editions and was also used as a radio serial. Sir Carl also served as a director with several companies, including the New Zealand Express Co., Ltd; J. B. Westray and Company; and Fabers Furnishing Company, Ltd. He was the chairman of the Dominion Fertiliser Company, Ltd, and of Hogg and Co., and vice-chairman of William Jeffery, Ltd.
