Coalgate sale satisfactory
Most classes of.sheep had a satisfactory sale at the Coalgate early ewe fair.
As at the weekly Addington store stock market, and at Ashburton on Thursday, two-tooths and the regular annual lines of adult ewes lifted about 30 per cent on last year’s rates.
Ihe fair was not large. From 9695 last year, numbers fell to 6715, comprising 2580 two-tooth ewes. 3885 adult ewes and 250 lambs.
It was a mixed yarding, but Coupworth ewes predominated. From a straight Romney sale a few years ago, the two-tooth section is now one of great variety, and the big swing to cross-breeding might not always be seen to advantage when it comes to selling. A pen of 100 Coopworths from J. E. Redfern iDarfield) topped the section at $26.20, while the best of the Romney and Romneycross ewes sold to $25.60 for 79 from W. F. Gerard ißonleai.
For their size, the Romneys sold well, usually at $l9 to $22. The Coopworth range was
Übualjy $l7 to $2O. While it might not have appeared a strong sale on the day, it was better than last year, when prices ranged mainly from $l2 to $l5.
Adult ewes, particularly the well known annual lines, met good demand throughout. W. F. Gerard ißenleai topped the section with 138 early-shorn Romney ewes at SlB.lO.
Other good sales included 156 annual draft Coopworths from the estate W. G. Gerard (Black Hills), at $16.40, 324 Romneys from the same vendor at $15.20; 140 early-shorn Coopworths from F. D. Richards (The Point) at $16.10, 250 similar ewes from the same vendor’s Rockwood property at $15.20. and 200 lateshorn Romneys from Miss E. E. Richards (Round Top) at $l4.
