Racing and trotting Another promising Stewart-bred galloper
Special correspondent Dunedin Windvale Beau could be as good as any of the ac-l complished gallopers the Levels owner-trainer-breeder, Cecil Stewart, has had over the last 20 years, judging by I his novice win at Wingatu'i on Saturday. The three-year-old Beaufort Sea — Graeme! gelding was close to the pace throughout, then dashed away to score bv five lengths. Windvale Beau, which has shown great ability in trainin had none the best of running when having his first start at Waimate last month. He is the second foal of Graemei. a Mellay mare which won in the Stewart colours. Her first foal, Windvale Toi. (by Aristoi) won four times earlier this season and went quite well for sixth on Saturday after a two-month break from racing.
. Windvale Beau, which ran greenly on Saturday, has; been troubled with shin soreness and Stewart has; . not been able to give him I much, work between races. ; His dam is a sister to Red; > Gae, winner of the Nelson i .Cup, D. P. Wilson Memorial | HCup, Kurow Cup and Ku-1 iimara Gold Nuggets in the 1973-74 season and to the] •I good winner, Windvale. Her; >; half-sister, Wynsome, left i : Windvale Gaylord, the win-! liner of four races last sea-| t son. Graemei and Red Gae are; si out of Graewyn, a sister to 'Fluid Drive, the dam of ; Windvale Lad, a grand winCner for Mr Stewart in the jearly 19605. Windvale Lad fjwon nine races and about s|sl2,ooo in 12 months as a 11 three and four-year-old. His , I wins included the Whyte ) Handicap at Trentham, Riv- ; erton'Cup and Otago HandiI cap. II Garbo, a Valkyrian mare -(which he bought cheaply ‘from Mr A S. Elworthy in
; the early 19405, is an ancestress of Windvale Beau. Mr Stewart used Garbo as; a hack and sent her to stud, las a nine-year-old. He mated; her with Theseus, a New! (Zealand-bred horse which I stood at a moderate fee in (Sotuh Canterbury. Theseus was grey, a colour reproduced in many of ; lithe horses bred by Mr Stew- ■ art. ,! The result of Garbo’s mat-. -1 ing was. fortunately, a filly |as she died without producing another foal. >j Mr Stewart was not altoi gether “stabbing in the ’ dark” when he began breed- ■ ing from Garbo in 1944. She : is a descendant of Miss I Kate, an English mare which t established a notable family. i Phar Lap, which raced in s i the 19305, and is still reilgarded as the greatest horse -•to race in the Southern ’Hemisphere, and Kindergarten, the great galloper II of the early 1940 s trace to i Miss Kate.
