Racing and trotting La Mer favoured in International Stakes
With the ground probably soft, anything could happen in the International Stakes at Te Rapa this afternoon, but one thing still pretty well certain is that La Mer and Uncle Remus will be the favourites.
Uncle Remus was a winner as a three-year-old in the spring when the tracks were very soft and the ground being that was hardly the cause of his defeat in the Guines at Ellerslie. La Mer won the Great Northern Oaks on going that was officially described as easy. It was sufficiently soft, though, to worry the trainer Malcolm Smith, who indeed had thoughts of withdrawing her from the race on that account. If it is fine today with a breeze the track might not cur out to much. The two horses met in. this one last year but the; outcome, with La Mer out[ on her own in front and Uncle Remus cut back into! third by Carlaw is not con-! elusive. By then Uncle; Remus was suffering badly! the respiratory trouble for which he soon afterwards underwent an operation. Uncle Remus was beaten; narrowly last time, by the three-year-old Vizier, in a weight-for-age 1600 m event at Wanganui on February 10. He came through the race well and his trainer Colin Ji Hings is well satisfied with his progress ■ ince. La Mer had her latest start in a weight-for-age 2000 m race for fillies and mares at Tauherenikau on February 6 and, naturally enough having regard to the conditions of the event, she won easily Under weight-for-age in' today’s 2000 m rare Uncle, Remus will be carrying 57kg. La Mer. a year older but profiting from a 2.5 kg allowance 56.5 kg. Of those against La Mer and Uncle Remus the best are likely to be Mun Leel and Shivaree. At last back, in the form that made her! such a distinguished filly! last season, Mun Lee runaway with the Challenge; Stakes at Rotorua on Febru-1 ary 10. That was over! 1900 m at Weight-for-age sol she has exactly the samel amount today. Along wirb Uncie Remus,j La Mer. Shivaree and four nrhers in 'he International! Stakes — Big Gamble,; Sound Wave. Walkinp Delegate and Golden Kay —■• Mun Lee is entered for Australia this coming autumn. A win could be expected to have her connections very seriously considering the trip. Almost as much an attraction today will be the 531.000 Lion Brown Sprint in which Dalgety Bloodstock have also taken a hand through bringing the New South Wales horse, Chinese l Boxer, for the race — they 1 have also assisted with the : International Stakes. Chinese Boxer a four-year-old. is evidently very smart, as he will need to be if he is to match the likes of March Legend. Arbe Chene.
