Neptune Cyprine’s well-known design
i The Neptune Cyprine, which is at Cashin Quay No. 1 loading for China, is the second ship built to the well-known Fredeim-type design. The design developed from the incorporation, in April 1963, of a joint venture between the Singapore Economic Development Board and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co, of Japan. All the Fredeim-type vessels have been built under licence from the Japanese company, and their construction was the first major at-l tempt to build ocean-going ships of 15.000 deadweight tonnes or more in Singapore. Work started in 1971, and the first vessel of the type was the Neptune Ruby, which was launched in 1972. The Neptune Cyprine was launched later in the same year. The Auckiand-Lyttelton-Dunedin service of the roilon vessel Coastal Trader was very much a Shipping Corporation service, said the Christchurch manager (Mr R. M. Henshaw) yesterday. Cargo quantities had risen sharply on recent voyages as Canterbury and other South Island shippers realised the economics of. this type of coastal shipping, he i said.
,> Contrary to the decline in J coastal shipping, the Coastal •I Trader was full when it >1 sailed last week, and it is .'expected to be full again (this week. J Mr Henshaw was unable Ij to confirm whether a pos- _[ sible fuel crisis arising from' ’levents in Iran was making' [[more people aware of the j advantages of coastal ship- ■ Ping. i A recent international evaluation disclosed that! j shipping was responsible for : ''only 4 per cent of the. j world’s consumption of fuel I i oil, and was five times more ( i efficient than road transport. ; ARRIVALS ; Coastal Trader (9.15 a.m.), 2500, Auckland, Capt.
