Farmers blamed
Sir, — The remarks of Mr Jones addressed to farm leaders in a leadership programme at Lincoln College on February 15 will serve two purposes: (1) to gain Mr Jones more publicity on which he apparently thrives; and (2) to further endear himself to thousands of farmers and would-be farmers, young and old. He referred to the doubling of farm land prices in the three years to 1976. A very large measure of responsibility for these ever increasing prices lies at the doors of the growing band of nouveau riche business and professional marketeers, anxious to take over existing farms largely as a means to gain additional tax exemptions.
These absentee landlords are a super-cynical, purely materialistic bunch, beside whom the freezing workers — to fake another extreme example — are simple and benevolent citizens. Mr Jones should divert his cynical sneers from the working farmer to his wealthy city colleagues whose greed has caused farm land prices to skyrocket. — Yours, etc., L. A. H. BOGREN. February 17, 1979.
