Exercise called off
PA Ashburton Exercise “Southern Safari,” the Army exercise being carried out in the Lake Heron district of Mid-; Canterbury, was called off at; midnight on Friday, 12 hours, early, because of high winds and rain. An Army spokesman said that the co-ordinator, Colonel l I. H. Burrows, was not per-: turbed at having to end the; exercise prematurely, as it! had gone so well, in spite of; the winds which hampered! soldiers and the Royal New Zealand. Air Force for much! of the week. The only troops left in the; area at the week-end were members of the 3rd Field. Squadron and Engineers, cleaning up. It was the intention toi leave the area in better con-! dttion than when the Army! came, said Colonel Burrows.! Bridges, roads, and fences, were all being checked and.! if necessary, repaired, ready! for civilian use again, he' said. The Field Squadron remained for its annual exercise. About 1400 Army and Navy personnel from Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong took part in the exercise.
