Shipping now normal

PA Wellington New Zealand shipping was virtually back to normal yesterday after the turmoil caused last week by the marine engineers’ dispute. The engineers called off their strike on Friday after a full day of negotiations with the shipowners at the office of the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger). The return to work was signalled by more shipping movements on Saturday than usual. The Cook Strait rail ferries began running again on Saturday morning, and

the biggest ship sailing under the New Zealand flag, the New Zealand Pacific, left Auckland for Wellington after a five-day delay. The R.N.Z.A.F. airlift across Cook Strait, which began on Wednesday when the ferries were drawn into the dispute, ended about midday on Saturday. The Air Force had more than 200 flights, carrying an average of four cars and 10 persons on each. The pay issues behind the strike will be aired at a meeting between the Maritime Employers’ Associa* tion and the Institute of Marine and Power Engineers later this week.
