International licences in great demand
PA Auckland Motorists are obtaining international driving licences in unprecedented numbers. Automobile Association statistics show that 42,507 licences were issued for international use in the year to June 30, 1978. This was an increase of 2651 on the previous year, and 9417 on the year to June 30, 1975.
The association’s secretary (Mr R. W. Lithgow), said the - increases indicated that more New Zealanders were keen to drive while overseas. It is difficult to say whether New Zealand’s rising emigration rate had anything to do with the
increases in licences issued. "It is very hard to make comparisons like, that,” Mr Lithgow said. “Some people get them when they don't really need them.
“The licences are valid only for a year, and some, people like to have them as a status symbol,” he said. “Visitors can drive quite legally in many countries such as Australia. Canada, the United States, West Germany, and the United Kingdom on their New Zealand licences.”
International licences are available from Automobile Association offices to motorists over 18 years of age, for $2.
