Rhodesia land law repealed

NZPA-Reuter Salisbury Rhodesia’s Land Tenure Act. long regarded by blacks as the cornerstone of white supremacy, has been repealed under new antidiscrimination laws. The act divided Rhodesia between its quarter of a million whites and its six million blacks.

The Acting President (Mr Jack Pithey) signed into law eight bills intended to end racial discrimination in housing, education, health services, and public places.

In a referendum last Tuesday, regarded as a triumph for Mr lan Smith, Rhodesia’s whites voted overwhelmingly in favour of a modified form of blackmajority rule. Removal of official racial discrimination is a key element in the bi-racial Government’s programme for a peaceful transition to oneman. one-vote elections in April.

Under the new laws, all schools and hospitals will be open to blacks. Black children, whose parents meet certain residential and financial requirements, are expected to start reporting to white schools on Monday.
