Close fire watch at Cass

A close watch will be kept on the fire-swept areas of the Craigiebum Forest Park and neighbouring scrub in the Cass area for most of the week-end. Twelve men from the Forest Service and a high-coun-try fire-fighting team were 1 expected to keep a look-out last night. Some will remain there today and perhaps tomorrow when north-west ’winds are forecast. Fire had raced through 100 acres of scrub on Thursday and had threatened Flock Hill station homestead near the forest park. The fire was virtually out, said a forest ranger, Mr A. F. A. Ferguson, yesterday afternoon. One or two hot spots had been dampened down earlier in the day. A few patches of smoke could be seen last evening but everything was “pretty well under control,” said Mr .A. T. Urquhart, at Flock Hill.

Conditions in the area are very dry. However, the firefighters had ready access to water from a creek near a tarsealed road, said Mr Ferguson. He did not think there would be any further danger.
