Really, Robert

Few spectators could have felt sorrier for Robert Anderson than he did for himself at Lancaster Park yesterday. Fielding as a substitute for Brendon Bracewell, Anderson was at mid-on ■when the Pakistan batsman, Javed Miandad, offered him the easiest of catches. It went to ground. Miandad had then not scored a run.

Miandad, dropped again at 27, went on to score 81, the main contribution to Pakistan’s 220 for six wickets at the end of the first day of the cricket test.

The picture captures Anderson’s mortification after he had missed the simple chance.
