Alcohol prices

Sir, — Examination of the prices in capital cities of the world which you published on February 1, shows the following. For house wine, Wellington was thirty-fourth out of 63 capitals. For whisky, Wellington was fiftyninth out of 64 capitals. For beer, Wellington was fortysixth out of 64 capitals. Since a main determinant of alcoholic beverage prices is the alcohol duties, this in.ormation suggests that our duties on beer, and particularly spirits, are low by international standards. One wonders what the social justification for this is? — Yours, etc.,

BRIAN EASTON February 1, 1979.
