Chelandry dispersal sale brings $138,400

PA Invercargill Forty-four lots changed hands for an aggregate of 5138,400, an average of 53210, at the Chelandry Stud’s unreserved dispersal sale at Taramoa on Tuesday. The well-performed racemare Lady Claymore, a sister to the highly-performed Tourie, fetched top price of $17,500.

Lady Claymore, in foal to the Alcide horse Approval, was bought by the mother-and-son combination of Mrs M. Rutherford and Mr R. Rutherford of the Beltana Stud, Parnassus. Lady Claymore, the winner of five races, is also a sister to Gold Wire, the winner of seven races in the North Island.

Lady Claymore’s dam Apathy, the winner of nine races, is regarded as one of the best racemares produced in Southland in post-war years. •

“I am very pleased with the result — all I can hope for now is that all buyers gain some enjoyment with their purchases,” commented Mrs Mary Dailey, who is transferring the Chelandry operation to her Prebbleton property.

“It was a very good sale,” commented Wrightson bloodstock manager, Mr Michael Floyd, of Wellington. “It was heartening to see so many mares and fillies retained in the south.” Mr Floyd thought that prices over all were reasonably good, taking all factors into account.

“It was a very satisfying sale with strong local interest.” commented Mr Rob Fielder, representing the coauctioneers, Pvne Gould, Guinness, Ltd.

Seven yearlings were sold for an aggregate of 517,500 I an average of 52917. Top price in the vearling section was 54000 paid bv Mr W.i Cunningham, of Sandhurst, for a grey colt by Approval out of Some Mahal, a mem-' ber of the noted Southland Queen Astrid non Stud Book family.

Some Mahal is a half-sis-ter to Mcßae, the winner of six races, and is closely related to Somelight, whose 18 wins included the Invercargill Gold Cup. The Wingatui trainer Stan McKay, who is enjoying a fine season, bid $3BOO for a quality filly bv Approval from the Royal Student mare. Capping. The filly, which is closely •related to the Egmont Cup winner, Tom Fullun, and Caledonian Planet, a good Australian winner, whose dam, Caledonian Lass, was sold to

Australia at the previous Chelandry dispersal sale in 1972.

Last season’s Otago Steeples winner, Taramea Bay, was knocked down to the Wrightson Bloodstock agent, Mr Barry Lee, for $4OOO. Taramea Bay revealed sufficient ability last season to suggest he will quickly recoup his investment. Another notable sale was the $7750 Mr R. Johnstone, of Millers Flat, paid for Belle Lomond, a juvenile winner and a sister to the star steeplechaser, Loch Linnhe.

Belle Lomond, only four, will have considerable broodmare worth later in her career as she belongs to the late D. P. Wilson’s famous Fireside family. Loch Linnhe’s other sister, Loch Erin, in foal to Approval, was knocked down to Mr C. W. McCall, of Christchurch, for $5OOO. Loch Erin, a seven-year-old, will have marked breeding potential.

Another notable broodmare sale was the $6lOO outlaid by the Ryan Syndicate, of Otautau, for Mountain Light, an eight-year-old Kurdistan mare, with a filly foal at foot by Approval and served again by that sire. Top price in the two-year-old section was $7250 for Loch Linnhe’s unnamed brother. He was knocked down to Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Christchurch, as agents.
