‘N.Z. has reneged' on Gleneagles
PA Wellington New Zealand’s trading, political and sporting relations internationally would be in jeopardy if the six rugby players’ invited to South Africa go there, the Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality (C.A.R.E.) has said.
The letter of the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Tafboys) to the New Zealand Rugby Union was evidence that the Government was aware of the consequences if the players went, C.A.R.E.’s secretary, Mr T. D. Newnham, said in a prepared statement.
“Now that the Rugby Union has refused to take action, it means that as matters stand at the moment, New Zealand has again reneged on the Gleneagles Agreement, which calls for effective action as distinct from words, to end sporting contacts with apartheid.” said Mr Newnham
