Police 'in control of gangs'

PA Wellington The police were still well in control of gang situations, said the Deputy Commissioner of Police ~ (Mr K. O. Thompson)Recent articles featuring the opinions of two Police Association officers, Dr R. Moodie and Mr G. Butterworth, were “not the official police viewpoint.” Mr Thompson said be did not want to enter into a controversy on the social factors giving rise to the formation of gangs or what the future might hold for gang members.

“But it is essential that the record be put straight,” he said. “The police have the capacity and will continue to take action where breaches of the law are committed by gang members.” They would guide young people away from situations which could bring them into conflict with the law, he said.
