Fire risk extreme

North Canterbury forests are at extreme fire risk, said the district Conservator of Forests (Mr J. W. Levy) yesterday. Canterbury is the highest-risk region in New Zealand at present. Mr Levy said that South Canterbury forests were only slightly less at risk. In Wellington, the Forest Service’s chief fire-patrol officer (Mr W. GirlingButcher) said that the conservancies of Auckland, Rotorua. Wellington, Nelson, West Coast, and Otago-Southland all had high fire risks. “Every year we have Canterbury problems but this year we have abnormal problems in Waikato, Rotorua, and the East Coast region as well,” he said.

If a forest fire started now it would be very difficult to bring under control.
