TV assn seeks members
The Canterbury Television Viewers’ Association will mount a membership drive that it hopes will develop the association into a national or. ganisation. At its first public meeting in Christchurch the association dedicated itself to a reduction of sex, violence, and sensationalism in news, less “irritating” commercials, and a removal of “political bias and deliberate suppression of news by some reporters and administrations.” It also opposed inappropriate screening times for some programmes, and repeat screenings.
The association’s committee. will draft a constitution, and seek ways to get complaints “out of the sitting room to the people responsible.” A member of a working Committee withdrew because, he said, the association's aims differed too much from his own. His were to encourage technical and administrative improvements in television.
The president (Mr C. K. Lowe) suggested that one of the channels be taken over by a private enterprise to create a level of competition that would improve standards.
