Hay barn destroyed

Damage estimated at $38,500 was caused when fire swept through a hay barn, 96m by 63m, on the property of Mr R. S. Slater at Hilton, near Geraldine, yesterday afternoon. As well as the barn, 400 {stacks of dressed grass seed valued at $13,000 were destroyed. Other losses included '3OO bales of hay valued at ] $3OOO and engineering equip'ment valued at $2500. The Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the fire with an engine and water tanker but the barn was all but destroyed.

It is thought that the fire may have started as a result of sparks from a welding plant igniting the hay.
