Tunnel tolls problem
Honesty boxes may increasingly replace toll collectors on the ChristchurchLyttelton road tunnel before tolls are abolished on March 31. according to the Road Tunnel Authority’s general manager (Mr L. E. Olliver). An honesty box was replaced by a toll collector yesterday when the afternoon shift came on at 3 p.m.
It was not possible to tell how honest motorists had been. “I think it was all right. Truck drivers certainly lodged their tunnel tickets,” Mr Olliver said. The honesty box was used in only one direction and toll collectors manned the traffic plazas in the other direction. Sickness, and the inability to get somebody to work overtime, caused yesterday’s problem.
Mr Olliver said a critical staff situation had been foreseen last year after the toll-free announcement prompted immediate resignations. Nobody seemed to know who was to be kept on and staff had taken other jobs just in case, he said. A further problem loomed with staff members wanting to take their leave before March 31, Mr Olliver said.
