Canadian gift of books

Waimairi County library patrons have received a boost to their reading scope. About 20 books written by Canadian and French-Cana-dian authors were presented to the Waimairi County Council by the Canadian High Commissioner to New Zealand (Mrs Irene Johnson).

The books are a gift from the Canada Council, an organisation similar to the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council in New Zealand. The Canada Council buys books from Canadian and FrenchCanadian authors and gives them to various libraries throughout the world.

The Waimairi County Council intends to distribute the books, which are worth a total of about $2OO, throughout its three libraries.

Although they are mainly suitable for adult reading, the books cover a variety of topics, including art, people, geography and biography. Some are novels. “We tend to buy books that are either written or published in Britain and the! United States. There is usually little opportunity to buy from places such as Canada, and so this is a marvellous gift,” said Waimairi County’s librarian (Mrs D. Brown). “All the books are good and give a true representation of publishing in Canada,” she said.
