Australia Day
Each year, on January 26, Australians commemorate the beginning of European settlement in their country. Settlement began with the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove on January 26. 1788. Today, Australia has a population of 14 million and is within 24 hours travelling time of most countries—which is a far cry from the seven-month voyage of the First Fleet from England. The photographs show two highly diverse views of Australia—the early
morning traffic streaming from the northern suburbs into Sydney, and a pen full of the 140 million sheep which form a vital part of Australia’s economy. These sheep are up for sale in the country town of Yarrawonga in Victoria.
