Surgeons sew on hand

Doctors hope that surgery to sew on the hand of a Christchurch man who had it severed in an accident on Monday will prove successful. In a nine-hour operation on Mondaj' the man’s hand was sewn back on to his arm using microsurgery.

Doctors at the Burwood Hospital carried out the surgery which entailed connecting first the bone, then arteries, veins, nerves, tendons, and skin. An attempt was made in 1966 to perform similar surgery on a boy, aged eight, at the Christchurch Hospital — though not using micro-surgery. The boy’s hand was amputated eight days later. The accident which resulted in the man’s hand being almost completely severed from the arm but for a small thread of tissue above the wrist, occurred when he was using a metal press. Late yesterday afternoon doctors said that they hoped that the operation would be successful as the hand was pink and the blood was flowing through it.
